André Gallant, a freelance photographer, travels the world over, taking expressive photographs. He is the author of several books including his most recent “Expressionism: Digital Dreamscapes and other Techniques.”

André teaches the world-renowned Photography Workshops with Freeman Patterson, with whom he co-wrote “Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image”, as well as the revised edition of “Photography for the Joy of It.”  He lectures throughout Canada, the US, and internationally.

A regular contributor to PhotoLife, and appearing in numerous magazines, André continually experiments with new visual approaches, techniques, film and digital in both his professional and personal photography, and he generously shares his ideas and expertise.

As the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics come to a close and as an avid watcher of all things Olympic, I was soon reminded of the talent that surrounds us in this great land of ours. First off our Canadian Athletes stepped up to the plate and delivered an exciting and rewarding 2 weeks of competition.  Some of our athletes suffered personal injury and painful loss. Some of our athletes might even feel they have let us down for one reason or another…I say…”How can that be? To even be an Olympian representing one’s country is a feat unto itself.”

Now you say “How does this relate to photography?” Well, it might not. I do like to think though that challenging oneself to better your craft whatever that may be is the lesson to be learned here. Our chosen craft is photography. We can learn from our Olympians, to believe in all that you can be and that with practice and patience…good things come.

As announced at our last meeting, the scheduled guest speakers are unable to make the evening. Instead, one of our own has stepped forward to present one of her recent trips … ETHIOPIA. Jean Weller will be presenting her imagery of the dramatic scenery, the ancient churches and peoples of the north as well as the tribes living in grass hut villages and the harsh desert of the southern area.

Many of you saw the GTCCC 2009 competition results that we presented at our December 14 meeting and realized “Hey, I can do that!”  The GTCCC competition is for individuals, although there is an award for the highest scoring club as well. If you are entering the GTCCC competition, images must be submitted at the meeting on January 11.   The GRIPS competition committee (and friends) will organize all of the individual submissions and submit them on January 28 in Toronto so time is, as they say, of the essence!

• You may submit up to 8 images as an individual
• The entry fee is $1 per image, due on January 11 (please bring exact amount if possible)
• Your individual entry form must accompany your submission (see link below)

Ken Newcombe is from the Burlington area. Ken works full time as a nature photographer. He conducts workshops in his rural home and in the field.  He will present different types of flash usage as well as the use of the better beamer.   www.kennewcombe.com
